Walking

Finding a new and exciting walk in an area nearby is not always easy. Walking offers links to sites that are free and have been useful in helping me find walks both when at home and planning walking holidays in the uk. Most sites have free downloadable route maps in one form or another along with detailed descriptions ensuring you can admire the landscape and not worry too much about taking the wrong path. Most people these days have a smartphone and there are plenty of apps that will track you on walks as well as work as a GPS. I personally spent about £10 on Viewranger getting my Nokia N8 updated. Much cheaper than the GPS devices on the market as a rule i take a freshly charged old phone with me as well to make sure i can still make a call should the GPS run the phone battery flat.

Bushcraft

The idea of learning everything you need to know when out in the bush is to enable you to "carry less by knowing more." However, when you first start bushcrafting or are learning a new skill having a device to hand with fast and easy access to information you need to refer back to is invaluable. I found one of the most difficult things to learn and learn safely, was identifying new and edible plants especially when in a new environment and having an online link saved me having to carry around large books.

Self Sufficiency

I have seen many people decide they want to go self sufficient but have no idea how much land, money, experience and determination they would need. If indeed you have a small holding or even a good size garden with fertile soil you are probably tied to a mortgage that you couldn't possibly afford if you were not working full time. So how do they manage it?
